  • Great diving in Key Largo – Day 2

Great diving in Key Largo – Day 2

4 fantastic dives today on the Spiegel Grove Wreck x 2, the Anabel Wreck and Reef, and the City of Washington Wreck and Reef! We were able to dive 25-27 minutes on the two Spiegel Grove wreck dives to nearly 100 feet depth and 50-minute dives on the two shallow reefs (less than 30 feet). I enjoyed diving with Guides Tim and Aden as well as 3 other divers in our group. I met a young attorney from Washington DC who is now furloughed due to the government shutdown; we enjoyed dinner together at the very popular Fish House in Key Largo. I was able to get in a 16-mile bike ride through Key Largo after the dives and still get to dinner by 6 PM. My new attorney friend is also staying at the inexpensive motel in Florida City which is cheaper than the least expensive campground in Key Largo. I finish two more dives on the Spiegel Grove tomorrow before heading home.

  • Excited to be diving again in Key Largo!

Excited to be back in Key Largo for 3 days of diving! Beautiful diving with Horizon Divers Guide “H” on the Anabel wreck and Finger Reef today with absolutely beautiful coral and many fish including a reef shark and manta ray, some large lobsters, and 2 turtles. Ideal diving conditions with the water temperature in mid-80’s today with minimal current. We were able to do two 55-minute dives with a maximum depth of 28.6 feet. Weather is predicted to be great through my last day on Wednesday. Tomorrow will include at least two dives on the Spiegel Grove wreck. Hotel and even tent camping spots remain very high in Key Largo, so I am enjoying a comfortable and much less expensive hotel in Florida City, about 30 minutes from Key Largo. Enjoy the video made up of my best clips using a GoPro.

  • Amazing dives on the Spiegel Grove Wreck in Key Largo, FL!

Amazing dives on the Spiegel Grove Wreck in Key Largo, FL!

Very excited about finally being able to dive on the Spiegel Grove Wreck in Key Largo, Florida today! I was delighted to have a guided tour of this wreck by another diver from New York which included multiple penetrations into the wreck. We even visited “Snoopy? located in the aft portion of the ship at the 100-foot level. Unfortunately, I only captured 4 good video clips since the GoPro was apparently switched to still photos during the dive which are very blurry. Our first dive’s maximum depth was 102.5 feet for 28 minutes, and the second dive’s maximum depth was 91.5 feet for 27 minutes. The current outside the ship was stronger on the second dive, so that required more air consumption, but nearly 30-minute dives at about 100-feet is very good for me! The Spiegel Grove is one of the largest ships in the world for diving (over 500-feet long with a maximum depth of 130-feet. Multiple dives are required to really explore this ship. The two dives today were amazing, but I hope to come back often and explore more of the ship with its amazing coral formations, multitudes of fish including reef sharks and goliath grouper.

  • Great SCUBA dives today with Horizon Divers in Key Largo, Florida!

Great SCUBA dives today with Horizon Divers in Key Largo, Florida!

I had signed up for a deep wreck dive on the Spiegel Grove, but the other divers previously signed up decided not to dive due to high winds and waves today. Therefore, I had to go on the shallow reef dives on the Elbow Reef. Absolutely beautiful coral with many fish including a shark and large lobster. We did two one-hour dives since the depth was less than 25 feet! Enjoy the video! Key Largo is 3 hours from Fort Myers, but the diving is well worth the drive! I was also pleased to learn that the person working in the Horizon Divers store previously worked at Shell Point Retirement Community and knew my name! Horizon Divers is a first-class operation that puts safety first and works hard to make every diving experience memorable!

  • Fabulous Dives in Pompano Beach, Florida

Fabulous Dives in Pompano Beach, Florida

Three fabulous dives in Pompano Beach, Florida with the South Florida Diving Headquarters – Pompano Beach on 5/31/2025! These will be my last dives before departing on my planned 6-month thru-hike of the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail from Mt. Katahdin, Maine to Springer Mountain, Georgia beginning on June 23, 2025. Yesterday, we did 2 dives on the Wreck Trek which included the Jay Scutti, Tracy, and Merci Jesus wrecks. 70-foot depth, minimal current, great visibility, ability to penetrate each wreck, and see lots of beautiful fish and carol. Our 3rd dive was on the Nursery with absolutely gorgeous coral and many fish (young fish in their nursery). I dove with a very nice couple from North Carolina. I was close to moving to another site for diving but was very encouraged by these great dives!

  • Good Friday Dive

    Good Friday Dive

After several months away from SCUBA diving, great day of diving on Good Friday in Key Largo, Florida with the Amoray Divers! Absolutely gorgeous coral reef with lots of fish in relatively shallow water (20-25 feet)! Dive boat warned us about rough seas with 4-5 foot waves, but I found ride to dive site and diving calm with long bottom time due to low depth. They limited dives to 45 minutes, and I returned to the boat with nearly 1/2 tank air (1500 PSI). Kathy and I enjoyed staying at the Amoray Dive Resort in Key Largo the night before dives, and I hope to return many times to explore the reef and some great wrecks in the area (USS Spiegel Grove, Benwood, City of Washington, USCG Duane, USCG Bibb). Very professional and knowledgeable crew on Amoray Diver boat; resort staff also very friendly and responsive. https://www.amoray.com/
